Friday 8th May 2026 saw some 40 people assembling in the Wentworth Car Park for an early start by coach to Noyon. Many were regulars, while others were going to our twin town for the first time. There were eight 6th-form students from Queen Elizabeth High School. The journey went as planned, with the sea crossing from Dover to Calais in pleasant sunshine.
At a civic reception in Noyon's town hall on the first morning the new mayor Patrick Déguise welcomed his opposite number Derek Kennedy and all the visitors from Hexham. Afterwards guests were invited by their hosts to various locations - to the Castle of Pierrefonds, or by coach to the Vivenel Museum and the Imperial Château of Compiègne.
The Confluent Restaurant was fully booked for Noyon hosts and guests on Saturday evening. Situated at the junction of two canals to the south west of Noyon, the summer terrace was popular in the evening sunlight. Afterwards a pétanque competition by lamplight was held between teams from each town.
On Sunday morning visitors had a guided tour of Noyon's historic centre, starting with the 12th-century cathedral. The afternoon was free to enjoy the many sights of Noyon and surroundings, including a trip to the local vineyard. In the evening Mayor Déguise invited hosts and guests to a dinner, followed by musical entertainment by Noyon and Hexham performers. A group from QEHS sang 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' - appropriate for the departure the following morning.
An early start on Monday morning ensured good time for the sea crossing and a safe return after another enjoyable weekend in our French twin town.
