FRENCH CONVERSATION
We are meeting via Zoom for informal French conversation on alternate Wednesdays at 8pm UK time (10th, 24th March/ 7th, 21st April and so forth).  If you wish to join in, please e-mail Gerry at parkins@hotmail.co.uk
for an invitation.  We usually have a representative from Noyon or Metzingen joining us and this is a great bonus.

The discussion group is very informal and is more of a chat. We have no preset discussion topics and to date have discussed, inevitably, the pandemic and government responses, but also films, the weather, holidays, Netflix series, with 'The Crown' receiving a lot of attention, and much more.

On average we have about 8/10 attending with an equal split between members from Noyon and Hexham.
We use breakout groups to create smaller groups of 4. The level of French spoken is varied, with some speaking little, if any, but happy to contribute in English. The same is true with our friends in Noyon, some of whom speak little English.

GERMAN CONVERSATION
Last year, our German Conversation group which normally meets in Caffè Nero, went on to Zoom, where we were joined by a friend from Metzingen. This year, our Zoom group has members from both Hexham and Metzingen, and is meeting on alternate Thursday evenings at 7.30pm UK time (4th, 18th March/ 1st, 15th April and so forth), to chat both in German and in English. If you’d be interested in joining in, then contact carolapriorattree@gmx.co.uk. For the main session we chat in small groups, so that conversation can be spontaneous, first in one language and then in the other. In the second half, it’s a free for all – one group, any language! The groups vary from session to session, so that everyone has a chance to get to know everyone else, and all standards of German and English are welcome – everyone is an expert in at least one of them.

There are no set topics – this is informal chat and is an ideal way to keep in touch with people that we know and to meet others. It has been really interesting to compare our lives over this last year, and Brexit has been mentioned, but so have all the other things that we might talk about, were we able to go to the pub or indeed to Caffè Nero. Not to mention Metzingen.
